All the “DIRT” From the REINY DAY QUARTER HORSES DERBY, NWRCHA FUTURITY NUTRENA COW HORSE CLASSIC and PENNY KNIGHT and DRAG N FLY RANCH “CASH” COW SHOW July 16th – 20th Brasada Ranch, Powell Butte, Oregon
Posted on Aug 18th, 2008
The Northwest Reined Cow Horse Association took a chance on moving one of its most important shows of the year to the new Rim Rock Riders facility at Brasada Ranch in Powell Butte, Oregon. The gamble paid off! Not only is the facility spectacular, but the weather was fabulous and we had exhibitors that came from California, Montana, Idaho and Canada along with Washington and Oregon. Approximately 180 horses showed up which is the largest number we have ever seen at one of our shows by far. The facility was indeed wonderful but it was the MONEY that brought in all these horses and riders! Over $25,000 in Added Money and prizes were offered over the course of the 4 ½ day show. Challenging cattle particularly in the Derby classes made for some exciting fence runs Saturday night. Jim Spence riding Tangys Classy Boots stepped up to the challenge and took over the lead with his 74/75 scores down the fence. With over 30 horses entered in the Open Futurity, the competition was tough. Todd Bergen dominated them all riding to first, second, fourth and fifth place finishes. The spectators in the packed stands loved it all – even as the clock struck midnight!
An additional $3,000 of Incentive Money was offered in the NWRCHA Open and Non-Pro Futurity to offspring of Stallions that participated in the 2007 NWRCHA Stallion Auction. Dan Roeser riding Sanjo Shine (There Comes a Time) for Roeser Ranch took home $1,620 and Kim Witty riding Dewey Dualler (The Dualler) for Dayna Maddox won $1,080 in the Open division and Mike Honald riding Plum Genuine (Plum Masterful) won an additional $300 in the Non-Pro class. For information on getting your stallion signed up for the 2008 NWRCHA Stallion Incentive Program, contact Diane Edwards (425) 226-6376. Rhonda Denney of Wapato, Washington had a great show. She ended up taking home one additional horse in her trailer as she was the lucky winner of the NWRCHA Raffle Filly. Starlights Boon Chex (Boons Starlight x Make me Chuckle), a 2006 brown AQHA filly was donated by Kim and Deb Witty of High Country Training. Raffle tickets were sold over the last couple months and the drawing was held at the Exhibitors Party on Friday, July 18th. Rhonda was thrilled with her new acquisition. We hope to see “Boon” entered in the 2009 Futurity! The NWRCHA has been extremely lucky over the years to have a wonderful pool of sponsors that supports our club and the events that we hold. This year we have a couple of new sponsors and a generous returning sponsor that really “stepped up” to assist with making our Derby and Futurity show a success.
We would like to thank Colleen Aufiero/Reiny Day Quarter Horses, Penny Knight/Drag N Fly Ranch and Nutrena. Colleen and Reiny Day Quarter Horses sponsored the $10,000 Added Money Derby, Penny Knight and Drag N Fly Ranch was the title sponsor for our $4,000 “Cash Cow” show on Sunday, July 20th and Nutrena not only sponsored the July 18th & 19th Horse Show but they also sponsored a well attended practice pen all week long! Thank you to all the sponsors, exhibitors, owners, vendors, show staff and the hard working Board Members of the NWRCHA and ORCHA. The show was a huge success and we look forward to an even bigger and better show in 2009!

Paul Dice Memorial Show
Posted on July 6th, 2008
The Northwest Reined Cow Horse Association held it’s annual Paul Dice Memorial Show June 13th – 15th in Spanaway, Washington. After enduring some really terrible NW weather at this show the past couple years, those who had seen the worst were treated to some of the nicest weather we could expect in June here in the Pacific Northwest. The sun provided background warmth to some “hot” cow horse competition. The Paul Dice Memorial is held in honor of Dr. Paul Dice who was a noted NW veterinarian. Dr. Dice and his wife Loye, raised and showed cow horses for many years and were early supporters of the NWRCHA.
This bridle horse event featured classes for the Open Bridle, Open Hackamore, Non-Pro Bridle, Novice Non-Pro Bridle and Non-Pro Hackamore. The overall high scoring horse from the Open and Non-Pro classes not only took home a nice paycheck but they also each took home a beautiful CR Morrison bronze sponsored by Cavalli Reined Cow Horses (Nick & Karren Costintino). Jim Spence had a great weekend, he won the Open Bridle on Durackular for owner Shellie Crosson and a check for $840 plus he won the Open Hackamore class on Tangys Classy Boots riding for Delores Lizer and received $750! Reserve in the Open Bridle was Roosters Prima Donna ridden by Dan Roeser for Sheila Combs ($700). The reserve Open Hackamore Horse was Diamond Hickory ridden by Mike Helsen for owner Dan Taggart taking home $625. In the Non-Pro classes, the Bridle class was won by Cow Cuttin Colonel owned/ridden by Allison Trimble ($820), Novice Non-Pro Bridle winner was Durackular owned/ridden by Shellie Crosson ($442.50) and in the Non-Pro Hackamore, it was Sarah Sherman riding Educating the Chics with top honors winning $410. Reserve Non-Pro Champions were Nick Costintino riding Caros Remalena in the Bridle and Novice Non-Pro Bridle class as well. Allison Trimble was Reserve in the Non-Pro Hackamore on Starlights Lil Prize.
Sponsors for the weekend were Summit View Ranch/Continental Dirt Contractors for the Paul Dice Memorial portion of the show and Today’s Dental Center for the Saturday/Sunday show. Summit View Ranch is owned and operated by the McCann family. They have been long time supporters of the NWRCHA and we would like to thank them for their generosity. The morning coffee and donuts they provided were greatly appreciated! Today’s Dental Center and Dr.’s Judd and Sarah Sherman show their support for the NWRCHA in a variety of ways. Not only do they sponsor shows, they both actively compete in both local and National cow horse and cutting events and they are always willing to help make our club events “special.” At this year’s Paul Dice show, the Sherman’s sponsored a DJ to entertain the crowd at a barbeque and awards party on Saturday evening. The arena was turned into part buffet, part dance floor and part practice pen for those who wanted to work another cow (or two). We try to offer something for everyone and a good time was had by all.
